I was trained as a journalist, and in my life’s work I’ve dealt regularly with news reporters and editors for well over 30 years. For longer than that, I’ve heard people complain bitterly about supposed media bias. In recent years the complaints have intensified and grown ugly, threatening the legitimacy of journalism.

With all that’s happening right now in the world’s two largest democracies, the spirit of Gandhi needs to be summoned again, says We Are Many-United Against Hate advisory board member Amitabh Pal.

The leaders of the world’s two largest democracies need to heed the principles of a remarkable man whose 150th birthday we are currently celebrating. Mohandas Karamchand “Mahatma” Gandhi, who was born on Oct. 2, 1869, left a worldwide legacy with his focus on ethics, nonviolence, tolerance and social justice.
